Not every summer traveler wants to roast on a beach. The Azores hover around a comfortable 24 degrees Celsius in July, making them perfect for hiking, whale watching, and soaking in thermal springs. São Miguel Island is the entry point, with direct flights from Boston, Toronto, and several European capitals. I paid $640 round-trip from New York on Azores Airlines, booked in May for an August departure.

The landscape looks like Hawaii mixed with Ireland: volcanic craters filled with lakes, hydrangea-lined country roads, and black-sand beaches. The ocean is cool, not warm, so this is not a floating-in-the-water-all-day destination. It is, however, one of the best places in the world to see sperm whales in the wild. I booked a cave suite in Imerovigli for 280 euro a night through Booking.com, which is steep but half the price of an equivalent Oia suite.

Most people stick to the caldera side and miss the island’s other half. Rent an ATV or a small car and drive to the southeastern beaches of Perissa and Kamari, where black volcanic sand meets clear water and sunbed rental costs only 10 euro. Always check the monsoon and hurricane season overlap. The Caribbean, for example, sits in a hurricane zone from June to November, which is why we excluded it from this summer list.

A cheap flight to a major airport means nothing if you then need a $400 seaplane transfer. Before you book a hotel, map the full door-to-beach route. The Maldives and Seychelles add mandatory speedboat or domestic flight transfers that can add $200 to $600 to a couple’s trip. Islands like Malta, Sardinia, and Koh Samui let you land, rent a car or scooter, and be on the beach within an hour for under $50. The World Tourism Organization consistently reports that transport costs are the number one budget blind spot for island travelers.

Book with flexible cancellation terms

Summer weather is fickle, and tropical storms can disrupt ferry and flight schedules even outside official monsoon zones. • Flying into the wrong airport: Bali is a single island, but the Philippines is an archipelago. A “cheap flight to Manila” is useless if your final destination requires a second flight and an overnight layover. Build the full domestic transit cost into your comparison.
• Not reserving rental vehicles ahead: On Sardinia, the Azores, and Mauritius, summer rental cars sell out. By mid-June, manual transmission subcompacts were the only options left on Sao Miguel. Book your wheels immediately after your flight.
• Underestimating sun intensity near the equator: UV indexes on Maldivian and Seychellois beaches routinely hit 11+ in summer. That is not “apply once in the morning” sun. It is “reapply SPF 50 every 90 minutes” sun. Reef-safe sunscreen is a regulation now in many marine parks; bring it from home.
• Chasing the “best beach” list instead of the right vibe: Anse Source d’Argent is stunning, but if you want nightlife and social energy, you will be bored on La Digue by day three. Match the island’s character to your personality, not just the photo.
• Skipping the official tourism website: Entry requirements, environmental fees, and local transportation strikes are all published on official .gov or tourism board websites. I check these 48 hours before departure, every single time. It has saved me from showing up to a closed ferry route more than once.
