I am Israel Umar, the founder of WakaAbuja. The name comes from the Nigerian Pidgin word “waka,” to walk or to travel.
Back in early 2024, I was frustrated. Every time I wanted a reliable restaurant review in Abuja or needed to compare hotel prices for a weekend trip to Lagos, I had to dig through platforms built for a different market entirely, ones that barely covered Nigeria at all, let alone got it right.
So I started WakaAbuja with a simple list of 10 restaurants in Abuja’s Wuse 2 area. Since then, the team has grown to include contributors covering flights, hotels, attractions, and travel planning across Nigeria, South Africa, and other African cities where our team has lived or travelled extensively.
