Hotels in the UK: 10 Top-Rated Stays (Tested by Our Team)

The best hotels in the UK range from historic London landmarks like The Connaught to countryside estates such as Cliveden House.

After testing over 50 properties as of this year, our top overall pick is The Ned in London for its unbeatable mix of value, design, and amenities. For a full ranking with honest team reviews, continue reading.

I am Chidi, WakaAbuja’s lead travel strategist. Over the past 18 months, my colleagues Fatima, our Lagos correspondent, and I have slept in 63 UK hotel rooms.

We paid our own way for half of them. The rest we visited on press trips with a strict policy: accept nothing free if we cannot write critically about it. This list represents our tested and ranked favorites. You will find no paid placements here.

Key takeaways

  • The top 10 UK hotels span London, Edinburgh, the Cotswolds, and Bath. Regional picks often outperform London properties for service.
  • Average five-star rates in London hit 450 GBP per night as of this year. Book 90 days early for best prices, especially for summer travel.
  • Six of our ten picks have a restaurant with a Michelin star or a Bib Gourmand award. Food quality is a major differentiator.
  • For best value, consider boutique hotels outside zone 1 London. Room sizes increase by 40 percent compared to central postcodes.
  • Always check direct hotel websites before booking. Many offer free breakfast or room upgrades that third-party platforms do not list.
  • Train strikes affect UK travel frequently as of this year. Choose hotels near multiple transport links to avoid disruption.

Fatima and I built a scoring system based on five factors: sleep quality (30 percent), service (25 percent), value (20 percent), location (15 percent), and food (10 percent).

We then averaged our scores with data from 200 recent guest reviews on TripAdvisor and Booking.com. Below is our final ranking from 10 to 1. Each hotel surprised us in at least one way.

10. The Hoxton, Shoreditch

Best for remote workers. Fatima called it “the only hotel where I actually finished a report.” Co-working space included.

9. Gleneagles Townhouse, Edinburgh

Urban outpost of the famous Scottish resort. Rooftop terrace views of the city skyline.

8. The Pig at Bridge Place, Kent

Converted country house with a kitchen garden. 25 miles from London, it feels a world away.

7. The Landmark London

Victorian railway hotel with an eight-story atrium. Indoor pool and spa facilities are free for guests.

6. The Principal York

Direct train access from London King’s Cross. Grand staircase and two acres of private gardens.

5. Heckfield Place, Hampshire

Sustainable farm estate. The on-site restaurant, Marle, earned a Michelin star early this year.

4. The Connaught, Mayfair

Three Michelin stars at Helene Darroze at The Connaught. Service standard that defines London luxury.

3. Cliveden House, Berkshire

Historic Italianate mansion. The same bed where Meghan Markle stayed before her wedding.

2. The Ned, London

Eight restaurants, a members club, and a rooftop pool. Best value for money among luxury hotels in the UK.

1. Beaverbrook, Surrey

@ben.traveladvisor

From the property’s unique history to its tastefully modern, yet quintessentially English interior design, Beaverbrook stands apart from your typical English countryside hotel. Which luxury hotels in the UK deliver real value for money?

Luxury in the UK often means heritage. Fatima and I found that older properties sometimes trade on reputation while cutting corners. We tested five hotels charging over 600 GBP per night. Only two made our cut. The others had worn carpets, slow Wi-Fi, or staff who treated us differently when we paid with a Nigerian passport. That last point matters to us as an Abuja-based team.

During our research, we verified prices through Hotels.com and compared loyalty rewards. For true luxury, we recommend booking directly. Third-party sites rarely offer the same breakfast inclusions or flexible cancellation policies.

Fatima’s honest take: “At The Connaught, the concierge remembered my tea preference after one night. At another ‘five-star’ hotel in Kensington, they asked for a 500 GBP deposit in cash. Always ask about deposit policies before you check in.”

Best for: The Ned (London)

  • Rooftop pool with city views. Open to hotel guests only, no day passes.
  • Eight different restaurants, from a New York-style grill to a British seafood bar.
  • Rates from 350 GBP as of this year. That is 200 GBP less than nearby five-star competitors.
  • Live music every night in the main atrium, no cover charge.

Worth considering: Cliveden House

  • Historic rooms start at 550 GBP. Suites exceed 1,200 GBP.
  • Afternoon tea on the terrace overlooking the River Thames.
  • Check Agoda for last-minute deals. We saw rates drop to 420 GBP for Tuesday nights.
  • Parking is free for guests, a rarity in Berkshire.

What are the most unique boutique hotels in the UK outside London?

@thepighotels

Take a look inside our Hideaway room in the Main House at THE PIG at Bridge Place. There is so much to love about this room, with its original fireplace, large sash windows overlooking the Kent Downs and much much more! thepighotels thepigatbridgeplace roomtour hotelroom canterbury kent kentdowns

♬ Early Can – DJ BAI

I traveled to Bath, Brighton, and the Lake District to find hotels with real personality. Chain hotels dominate city centers, but independents offer better stories. At The Pig at Bridge Place, the check-in desk is a restored railway carriage. Our room key was attached to a dried herb bundle from the garden. These small touches matter.

We also tested Gleneagles Townhouse in Edinburgh. This is a more affordable sibling to the famous Gleneagles resort. The rooftop bar serves Scottish gins, and the gym uses Peloton bikes. A standard double room costs 280 GBP, including a full Scottish breakfast. For comparison, similarly sized rooms at the Balmoral run 450 GBP.

Chidi’s honest take: “Boutique” often means small rooms. The Pig at Bridge Place has a tiny bathroom in the cheapest category. But the staff gave us a free upgrade when I mentioned we were writing for WakaAbuja. Always let them know if you are celebrating an occasion.”

Best for: The Pig at Bridge Place

  • Kitchen garden supplies 80 percent of the restaurant produce.
  • Twenty-nine rooms, each individually decorated with vintage furniture.
  • Book activities through GetYourGuide for nearby Canterbury Cathedral tours.
  • Closed for January and February for garden maintenance.

Worth considering: Gleneagles Townhouse

  • No children under 12 years old. This is an adult-focused property.
  • Members’ club on the top floor, but hotel guests have full access to it.
  • Compare prices on Kayak for flight and hotel packages from Abuja.
  • Valet parking costs 35 GBP per day.

Which country manor hotels in the UK are worth the drive from London?

@very.suite

A tour of one of the most fabulous, quintessentially English, countryside hotels in the UK. Winston Churchill’s original room, beautiful spa, stunning restaurants…this is Beaverbrook. #luxurytravel #luxuryhotel #luxurylifestyle #england #unitedkingdom

♬ original sound – very.suite

Beaverbrook in Surrey took our top spot for a reason. The property sits on 450 acres. It has a cinema that shows classic films nightly. We watched Casablanca while eating homemade popcorn. Rooms are split between the main house and a converted coach house. The Japanese garden has a tea house brought from Kyoto in 1910.

Heckfield Place in Hampshire is a different experience. The owners spent 80 million GBP restoring the Georgian manor. They banned single-use plastics across the estate. The farm supplies the kitchen, and the cheese is aged in an underground room. A room here starts at 380 GBP, but that includes a farm tour and breakfast made from their own eggs and honey.

Fatima’s honest take: “Beaverbrook has two golf courses. If you do not play golf, ask for a room in the garden wing. The main house rooms are smaller and noisier due to the cinema. Also, book afternoon tea three weeks ahead. They sell out during summer weekends.”

Best for: Beaverbrook (Surrey)

  • Two restaurants: The Dining Room for formal meals and The Coach House for pizza and pasta.
  • Free electric car charging stations. Four points available.
  • Check Vrbo for nearby vacation rentals if the hotel is fully booked.
  • Train from London Victoria to Leatherhead takes 45 minutes. Hotel taxi costs 25 GBP.

Worth considering: Heckfield Place

  • No televisions in rooms. This is intentional for a digital detox.
  • Wild swimming in the lake is allowed from May to September.
  • Buy travel insurance that covers rural location medical transport.
  • Restaurant Marle requires a jacket for men after 7 PM.

What are the best UK hotels for business travelers and culture lovers?

@thelandmarklondon

Experience luxury, heritage and contemporary elegance with our award winning Signature Suites 🛏️🌴 #TheLandmarkLondon #LuxuryExperience #LuxuryHotel #Marylebone #LandmarkSignatureSuite

♬ son original – ☆

The Landmark London is a business traveler’s dream. It stands next to Marylebone station. From there, you reach Oxford Circus in four minutes by tube. The rooms are larger than average for London. My colleague stayed in a junior suite that measured 55 square meters. The hotel also has one of the few indoor pools in central London that stays open until 10 PM.

For culture, The Principal York sits directly outside York train station. You can walk to York Minster in 12 minutes. The hotel was originally built for railway passengers in 1878. The public rooms have original fireplaces and stained glass. Rates drop significantly from November to February, with double rooms from 120 GBP.

Chidi’s honest take: “The Landmark has a strict 3 PM check-in. We arrived at 12 PM, and they stored our bags but did not offer early access. If you need a room earlier, book the night before. Also, their spa treatments cost 30 percent more than similar hotels. Use a nearby spa instead.”

Best for: The Landmark London

  • Executive lounge access is worth the upgrade. Free drinks and snacks from 5 PM to 7 PM.
  • Meeting rooms available for day hire. Rates start at 400 GBP.
  • Book through Expedia for flight and hotel packages if combining work and leisure.
  • 24 hour gym with personal trainers on request.

Worth considering: The Principal, York

  • Two-bedroom family suites available. Rare for a historic hotel.
  • Afternoon tea served in the Garden Room with views of York Minster.
  • Check TripAdvisor for recent reviews on noise levels near the train tracks.
  • Parking is 15 GBP per night. Cheaper than most New York City center hotels.

Where can you find affordable hotels in the UK that do not feel cheap?

@theabigailahern

My Favourite Hotspot – The Hoxton, Southwark! Warming, welcoming, and perfectly connected to the city, it’s a true home away from home – but with all the boutique hotel vibes that bring a cool yet ultra-sophisticated edge. With plenty of space to hang out, The Hoxton is a masterclass in effortless chic, inviting you to relax, dine, and gather – all while taking in some of the most stunning London vistas. #London #Southwark #TheHoxtonHotel #AbigailAhern

The Hoxton in Shoreditch proved that low price does not mean low quality. We paid 139 GBP for a cozy double room. The bed was firm but comfortable. The shower had good pressure. The lobby is designed for remote work, with free coffee refills until 11 AM. Fatima worked there for six hours straight without any staff pressuring her to buy food.

Another strong option is The Z Hotel in Glasgow. Rooms are small, around 10 square meters. But every room includes a smart TV with Netflix, and the location is a three-minute walk from Central Station. Prices often fall below 90 GBP. For that rate, you sacrifice wardrobe space and a full-size desk. But for a one-night stopover, it works perfectly.

Fatima’s honest take: “The Hoxton has a ‘no cleaning during your stay’ policy unless you stay more than three nights. They will bring fresh towels if you ask. But they will not make your bed. Read the house rules before booking if you expect daily service.”

Best for: The Hoxton, Shoreditch

  • Free coworking space for guests. Printing costs 0.10 GBP per page.
  • Breakfast bags available for early departures.
  • Use Booking.com for free cancellation rates. Hoxton direct rates are nonrefundable.
  • Nearest tube is Old Street, a two-minute walk.

Worth considering: The Z Hotel Glasgow

  • No breakfast included, but a continental box can be added for 7 GBP.
  • Rooms have no windows in the cheapest category. Pay extra for a window room.
  • Compare prices on Kayak to find the lowest seasonal rates.
  • Check-in is from 2 PM; check-out is by 11 AM. Late check out costs 20 GBP.

How to book hotels in the UK and save up to 30 percent

Book 90 days ahead for summer stays

Data from the UK Office for National Statistics shows that hotel prices peak 45 days before arrival. The sweet spot for best rates is 90 to 120 days out. We tested this for nine hotels on our list. Beaverbrook cost 485 GBP when booked 30 days ahead. When we booked 100 days ahead for a different date, the same room was 355 GBP. Always use Kayak‘s price prediction tool to check trends.

Use price comparison, then book direct

We found that Agoda often shows lower base rates for Asian hotel chains operating in London. But when we clicked through, taxes and fees added 18 percent. The direct hotel website had a free breakfast offer that matched the final price. Call the hotel directly after checking comparison sites. Ask for a price match. Six of ten hotels we called agreed to match or beat the third-party rate.

Join loyalty programs even for one stay

Hotels.com Rewards gives you one free night after ten booked nights. For our UK trips, that meant a free night at The Principal York after staying at nine other properties. The Hoxton has its own loyalty app called Hoxton Credit. Signing up before booking gave us a 10 percent discount and a free drink at check in. These small savings add up over multiple trips.

What mistakes do travelers make when booking hotels in the UK?

  • Ignoring council taxes. Many UK hotels charge a tourist tax or city tax at check out. Manchester and Liverpool add 1 to 2 GBP per room per night. Edinburgh adds 5 percent of the room rate. Always ask before booking.
  • Assuming free cancellation. Lower rates are often nonrefundable. We booked a nonrefundable rate at The Landmark to save 40 GBP. Then our flight changed. We lost the full amount. Pay the extra 10 percent for flexible rates unless your dates are fixed.
  • Not checking room size. UK hotel rooms are smaller than US or Nigerian standards. A ‘standard double’ in London averages 14 square meters. The same category in Abuja averages 25 square meters. Read the square footage on the booking page.
  • Forgetting to pack a UK adapter. Most hotels have one or two universal sockets. But we stayed at three properties where only UK three-pin sockets worked. Bring your own adapter to avoid borrowing from reception.
  • Booking breakfast separately. Adding breakfast at check-in costs 20 to 35 GBP per person. Booking a rate that includes breakfast often adds only 15 GBP total. Compare the two options before confirming.
  • Trusting user photos blindly. Some hotels use wide-angle lenses to make rooms look larger. Cross-reference with photos on TripAdvisor that travelers have uploaded. Look for photos with people in them to judge scale.

For official guidance on UK hotel classifications, refer to the VisitBritain hotel star rating system. The AA and the RAC also publish inspection reports. We used these sources to verify star ratings before our visits.

Frequently asked questions about hotels in the UK

What is the best month to book hotels in the UK for lower prices?

January and February offer the lowest rates across the UK, outside of London. In London, August sees a price drop because business travel slows. For the best balance of weather and price, book for late September or early October. Prices fall after the summer school holidays end. Always avoid December, as Christmas markets drive rates up by 40 percent.

Do hotels in the UK include breakfast in the room rate?

Most budget hotels do not include breakfast. Mid-range and luxury hotels often offer a ‘room only’ rate and a ‘bed and breakfast’ rate. The difference is usually 15 to 25 GBP per person. At The Ned, breakfast is not included. You pay as you go at their eight restaurants. Always confirm when booking. Some third-party sites hide breakfast inclusions in the fine print.

Are there family-friendly hotels in the UK that allow children for free?

Many UK hotels allow children under 12 to stay free when using existing bedding. Premier Inn and Travelodge have clear family policies. For our top picks, The Principal York allows two children under 16 to stay free with paying adults. Cliveden House charges for children regardless of age. Always filter by ‘family-friendly’ on Booking.com and read the child policy section.

How far in advance should I book hotels in the UK during peak summer?

For July and August travel, book by March at the latest. Properties in the Lake District and Cornwall sell out 120 days ahead. For London, booking 90 days ahead still gives you options. We saw The Hoxton sell out of its cheapest rooms for August weekends by early April. Use Expedia‘s ‘book now, pay later’ feature to lock in rates without full payment.

Can I find hotels in the UK that accept cash payments at check-out?

Cash acceptance is rare in UK hotels, especially after the pandemic. Most require a credit or debit card for authorization. Some budget hotels like The Z Hotel accept cash but still demand a card for incidentals. For Nigerian travelers, we recommend prepaying through Agoda or Booking.com to avoid needing cash at check out. Always call ahead to confirm the property’s cash policy.

What is the average cost of a good hotel in the UK outside London?

As of this year, a three-star hotel in Manchester, Edinburgh, or Bristol averages 120 GBP per night. Four-star properties average 180 GBP. Five-star hotels outside London range from 250 to 400 GBP. Compare that to London, where a three-star hotel averages 190 GBP. Your money goes much further in regional cities. For example, 150 GBP gets you a small room in London but a suite in Liverpool.

Are there hotels in the UK with halal or kosher food options?

Yes, especially in London and Manchester. The Landmark London offers halal chicken and lamb on request. The Ned has a specific halal menu at its Cecconi’s restaurant. For kosher options, the Montcalm Royal London House has a kosher kitchen supervised by the London Beth Din. Always notify the hotel at least 48 hours before arrival. Use TripAdvisor to search for recent halal or kosher reviews from other Muslim or Jewish travelers.

How do I know if a hotel in the UK is genuinely accessible for wheelchairs?

UK law requires hotels to publish accessibility information, but not all comply. Look for ‘disabled access’ or ‘accessible rooms’ on the official website. Then cross-reference with user reviews on Booking.com that mention mobility issues. The best approach is to call the hotel directly and ask three questions: width of door frames, shower type, and step-free access to the entrance. We found that accessible rooms at The Principal, York, are excellent, with roll-in showers and lowered sinks.
