When is the best time to visit Maui?

Maui is warm year-round, but “best” depends entirely on your tolerance for crowds and your budget. April and May, then September and October, are the shoulder season sweet spots. We find that Booking.com and Vrbo often reveal condo inventory that is cheaper than resort booking engines, especially for stays over five nights.

Ten days lets you slow down enough to spend two nights in Hana without feeling like you sacrificed time elsewhere.

The biggest planning error is treating Maui like a small island you can circle in a day. The Road to Hana alone is a 10-hour minimum round trip from Kihei if you stop for waterfalls and banana bread. The jet lag from an East Coast flight will steal your first morning. A 3-day trip is only viable if you are on Oahu for a conference and want a quick taste, and even then, you will miss the sunrise and likely regret it.

What is the current situation in Lahaina post-fire?

Lahaina town was destroyed by the wildfire and the historic Front Street is gone. The bypass road is open, which connects Kaanapali and Kapalua to the rest of the island without driving through the restricted zone. Active debris removal and rebuilding are underway as of this year, but the timeline for full recovery stretches far into the future.

You can and should visit West Maui. The resorts and condos in Kaanapali and Kapalua are fully operational and need visitors to sustain the local economy. What you cannot do is gawk at the burn zone. The area is closed off for a reason, and respectful tourism means staying out unless you are volunteering with a recognized local organization. I made the mistake of trying to see the area from a side road on my trip last year, and it just felt intrusive. Go to West Maui to support the businesses that are open, book a stay via Expedia to help fill rooms, and tip generously.

What reservations do I absolutely need to make in advance?
